No machine lasts forever, and that includes your boiler. Eventually, the time comes when replacing it becomes the best option - whether you're looking to improve energy efficiency, lower your heating bills, or simply keep your home warm and cosy all winter long.

The idea of replacing your boiler can feel daunting. After all, it's a key part of your home's heating and hot water system, so it's natural to want a clear understanding of what's involved before diving in.

M J Burt's heating experts have decades of experience installing all kinds of boilers, and we're here to guide you through every step of the process. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about getting a new boiler installed, from the reasons you might need one to what you can expect during the installation itself!

Why install a new boiler in your home?

There are plenty of good reasons to think about installing a new boiler in your home. Here are the biggest benefits:

  • Modern boilers are much more energy-efficient than older models, helping you save on energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint. If your current boiler is over 10 years old, it's probably not running as efficiently as it could be. A new one could significantly lower your annual energy bills.
  • Modern boilers often include smart thermostats or programmable timers, making it easy to manage your heating while helping you save even more energy.
  • Older boilers tend to break down more often, which can result in costly repairs and disruptions (especially during the colder months). They may also pose more risks, like carbon monoxide leaks. Newer boilers are more reliable and come with enhanced safety features for extra peace of mind.
  • A newer boiler can make your home more appealing to potential buyers, potentially increasing its value. This makes it a smart long-term investment.

Which type of boiler should you choose for your home?

When picking a new boiler, it's important to find the one that best fits your home and lifestyle. Here's a quick guide to the most common options:

  • Combi boilers: These are the most popular boilers in the UK due to their space-saving design and efficiency. A combi boiler heats water directly from the mains whenever you need it, so there's no need for a separate hot water cylinder. This makes it perfect for smaller homes with limited space.
  • System boilers: A system boiler uses a hot water storage cylinder but doesn't need a water tank. It's a great option for homes with more than one bathroom or a high demand for hot water as it provides a steady supply, which is especially handy for larger families.
  • Conventional boilers: Also known as regular or heat-only boilers, these are best suited for larger homes with older heating systems that include a hot water tank and feed tanks. They're ideal if your home has an older radiator system that might not handle the high water pressure of a combi or system boiler.

Before deciding, think about things like the size of your home, how much hot water you use, and the space you have for the boiler. It's always a good idea to consult with a professional installer to help you choose the right boiler for your needs.

What to expect during a boiler installation

The installation process for your new boiler may differ based on the type of boiler you choose and how complex the job is, but here's a simple guide of what you can expect:

1. Initial assessment

A qualified engineer will visit your property to assess your current heating system and recommend the best location for your new boiler. They'll take into account your heating needs, available space, existing pipework, and where the flue will go. Together with your input, they'll help choose the best boiler type - combi, system, or conventional - and the right size to keep your home warm and meet your hot water needs. They'll also check if any extra work is required, such as upgrading the pipework or installing new radiators.

2. Shutting off utilities

When it's time to start the work, the engineer will turn off your current boiler's gas and power to make sure everything is safe during the installation. If you're replacing an old boiler, they'll also drain the central heating system to remove any water from the radiators and pipes.

3. Removing the old boiler (if applicable)

If you're replacing a boiler, the engineer will disconnect it from the gas, water, and electrical systems. They'll then remove the old unit and dispose of it in an environmentally responsible way. This might take a little longer if the old boiler is in a hard-to-reach spot.

4. Preparation work

If needed, new pipes will be installed or your existing ones will be upgraded. The engineer will also fit a flue to safely vent exhaust gases outside, which may mean drilling through walls to get it in the right position. If the new boiler is going in a different spot, they'll take care of adding new mounting brackets and connections to make sure everything is securely in place.

5. Installing the new boiler

Once the old boiler is out of the way, your new boiler will be securely fitted on the wall or floor (depending on the space and model). The engineer will connect it to the gas supply, water mains, radiators, and hot water tank if needed. They'll also handle the wiring for the boiler, controls, and thermostat, and make sure all the important safety features, like the pressure relief valve, are properly installed.

Depending on your home layout and the type of boiler, this part of the installation can take anywhere from one to three days.

6. System flushing and testing

Your heating system might need a power flush to clear out any sludge or debris that's built up inside. Once that's done, the system is refilled with water, and the engineer will check the pressure to make sure everything is working properly.

7. Commissioning the boiler

The engineer starts the boiler up for the first time to make sure everything is running smoothly. They'll adjust the settings, like temperature and pressure, to suit your home's needs. They'll also carry out carbon monoxide, gas safety, and ventilation checks to make sure everything is safe and working as it should.

8. Instruction and handover

The engineer will show you how to use your new boiler, including helpful tips on adjusting the thermostat and setting up any smart controls. They'll also share recommendations for future servicing and maintenance to keep your boiler running efficiently and make sure it lasts for years to come.

9. Certification and paperwork

Finally, you'll receive the necessary certification for your new boiler, which is important for your warranty and to prove your installation complies with all safety regulations.

And just like that, you've got a brand-new, energy-efficient boiler you can count on to keep your home cosy whenever you need it!
